First of all, when buying a new laptop, you should consider a number of points:
Screen size: Choose wisely from the start (11.6" to 17.3"), as it cannot be upgraded later.
Screen quality: Prioritize eye comfort. Decide on Touch vs. Non-touch and a resolution (Full HD, 2K, or 4K).
Processor: Focus on clock speed, cache, and cores. Choose between Intel or AMD based on your performance needs.
Intel Brands by Performance
Core (i3, i5, i7, i9): The standard for high performance and advanced features; ideal for most users and professionals.
Pentium & Celeron: Budget-friendly options with fewer features; best for basic tasks like web browsing and office work.
Xeon: High-end, scalable processors designed for maximum speed and reliability; used primarily in servers and workstations.
Processor Modifier: In the Intel Core brand we have processor modifier that are i3, i5, i7, i9 and the higher brand modifier means a higher level of performance and sometimes contains additional features such as: Intel Hyper-Threading Technology. But Intel Pentium and Intel Celeron processors do not use this naming convention.
1. Generation & SKU
Generation: The first 1 or 2 digits (e.g., 8800 is 8th Gen, 11800 is 11th Gen). Higher is newer.
SKU: The last 3 digits identify the specific model. Higher usually means more features, but don't compare them across different generations.
2. Pentium & Celeron
Pentium Gold: Better performance (4 digits + suffix).
Pentium Silver: Cheaper/Budget (Prefix + 4 digits).
Celeron: Basic models, found in 3-digit or 4-digit formats.
3. Common Suffix Meanings
K / X / XE: Unlocked for maximum power and overclocking.
H / HK / HQ: High performance, usually found in gaming or workstation laptops.
U / Y: Power-efficient for thin laptops and longer battery life.
F: Requires a separate (discrete) graphics card.
G / G1-G7: Indicates the level of built-in graphics technology.
T / S: Optimized for power or special editions.
AMD: AMD processors generally have two brands, the Ryzen and the A series. The A series consists of three sub-families and can be used for everyday use such as browsing the Internet, watching videos, text processors and other normal activities.
Processor Brand & Family: The first digit is the processor family which is often 3, 5, 7, or 9 For the Ryzen family, they are similar to Core i Intel Family, consisting of four series: Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, Ryzen 9 and we can also say that their usability are similar to Core i 3, 5, 7 and 9 but with slightly lower performance. We also have Ryzen Threadrippers, a high-end, multi-core processor, designed to run applications that involve a lot of computations that a conventional processor is not capable to run.
Processor generation: The second number is the generation of the processor and the higher the number means the higher generation. Generation 5 is the latest generation of AMD processors.
Processor performance: The third number is the performance indicator for the processor and the higher the number means the more powerful processor.
SKU Number Digits: SKU number is a unique number that identifies the brand, type, color, and size of a product. Although the higher the number means more features, but SKU numbers are not recommended for comparison across different generations or product lines.
Product Line Suffix: Suffix is another point used to identify the capabilities of a processor and each has a different meaning.
G means that the Ryzen processor has the AMD Radeon RX Vega graphics card.
X means high performance
F means it requires discrete graphics, discrete graphics means a processor with a separate GPU.
G means includes discrete graphics on package.
U means very low power.
HK means high performance
No Suffix means the Ryzen processor is a desktop processor.
4. RAM: Your RAM determines how many applications you can run at the same time.
4-8 GB RAM: For normal daily use such as browsing the Internet, playing videos and using office applications.
8-16 GB RAM: For large databases, video and photo editing applications.
At least 16GB of RAM: For an impressive level of multitasking, to run 3D applications and high-end games.
5. Storage: is used to store your files, you must choose one according to your needs and also consider the type, SSD or HDD or NVME?
HDD: Cheap but slower than the other two types.
SSD: More expensive than HDD but faster.
NVME: Much faster than the other two but also more expensive.
